Market Orders for Stocks and ETFs

Updated this week

A Market Order lets you buy or sell a stock or ETF at the current market price.

When you place a market order, your trade is typically executed immediately, but the exact price is not guaranteed. It will be filled at the best available price at that moment.

Market orders are ideal for investors who prioritize speed and want to enter or exit a position quickly.

How do I place a Market order?

Follow these steps to place a Market buy order:

  1. Tap the Stocks tab

  2. Choose the stock or ETF you wish to buy

  3. Tap Buy at the bottom of the screen

  4. Select Market order from the dropdown in the top-right corner

  5. Enter the number of shares you or dollar amount wish to purchase

  6. Select your payment method. You can purchase with your Stocks Cash or convert the funds in your Crypto Wallet.

  7. Review the order details and confirm the transaction when you’re ready

Notes:

  • The minimum purchase is $1 (if fractional shares are supported), or 1 full share (if not).

  • For Market buy orders by dollar amount, the final dollar amount is unknown at order placement. An extra 2% cash is temporarily reserved to accommodate price changes.

    • Reserved cash is released once the order is complete or canceled.

    • If funding with crypto, you’ll need to sell enough crypto to cover both the purchase and the 2% reserve.

    • If the final executed amount goes over the reserved amount (due to high market volatility), the excess will be deducted from your Stocks Cash account, which may result in a negative balance.

  • Make sure your Stocks Cash balance is enough to cover your order, including any reserves.

    • If your balance is negative and you’re selling crypto to fund your order, sell extra crypto to cover the shortfall.

  • You can buy, sell, and hold fractional shares for most stocks. Some stocks and ETFs do not support fractional shares; for these, you must buy whole shares only.

Follow these steps to place a Market sell order:

  1. Tap the Stocks tab

  2. Under Portfolio, choose the stock or ETF you wish to sell

  3. Tap Sell at the bottom of the screen

  4. Select Market order from the dropdown in the top-right corner

  5. Enter the number of shares you or dollar amount wish to sell. The proceeds will be deposited into your Stocks Cash.

  6. Review the order details and confirm the transaction when you’re ready

Notes:

  • For Market sell orders by dollar amount, we calculate and reserve the number of shares to sell, then execute the order based on that share quantity. The final amount you receive may be higher or lower than requested, depending on the execution price.

  • You can buy, sell, and hold fractional shares for most stocks. Some stocks and ETFs do not support fractional shares; for these, you must buy whole shares only.

How do I view my transaction history?

You can view your transaction history in the following ways:

  • From the home screen, go to Stocks > Portfolio

  • From the bottom navigation bar, go to Accounts > Stocks Cash > Portfolio. To view your transaction history, tap the ‘clock’ icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Can I cancel an order after it’s been placed?

You can cancel any order that has not yet been filled. To cancel a pending order:

  1. From the home screen, go to Stocks > Portfolio.

  2. Review the Open orders and tap the order you wish to cancel

  3. Tap the Cancel order button at the bottom of the screen and confirm the cancellation
