Information about the Passkey feature in the Crypto.com App

Updated over 3 months ago

What is a passkey?

A passkey is a secure authentication protocol that enables faster, easier, and more secure verifications across your devices. The cryptographic key pair is generated and stored securely on your device, allowing for anti-phishing capabilities and providing enhanced account protection.

Passkey Setup

How do I enable Passkey for the Crypto.com App?

The Passkey feature is currently supported on iOS 16+ and Android 9+. If you want to set up a passkey, please ensure your device’s operating system meets the requirement.

When you add a passkey, you can choose to save it on your current device, an external security key, or on a different device (iOS only).

To set up a passkey in the Crypto.com App, follow these three steps:

1. Go to Settings > Security > Passkeys

2. Tap Add Passkey in the pop-up or at the bottom of the page

3. Enter your passcode

4. Enter your 2FA code (if required)

5. Choose where to save your passkey to

(a) To save it on your current device, tap Continue and complete the authentication process

(b) To save it on another device, tap Other Options > iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Use the other device to scan the onscreen QR code and complete the authentication process. (iOS only)

(c) To save it on a security key, click Other Options > Security Key. Insert your security key and follow the on-screen instructions thereafter to add the passkey.

You can set up a maximum of 10 passkeys in your Crypto.com App account.

Using Your Passkey

How can I use my passkey in the Crypto.com App?

You enjoy a more seamless experience at login and when whitelisting a withdrawal address or withdrawing cryptocurrency by using a passkey. You no longer need SMS OTPs and 2FA codes.

When using your passkey on iOS devices, you will be prompted to verify yourself with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. On Android devices, this will be done via a face or fingerprint scan, PIN, or pattern, depending on how you have set up your screen lock.

Can I still use my passkey if I have changed my device?

As your passkeys are backed up securely in the iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager, they are available on all devices which are signed into the same iCloud or Google account.

Alternatively, you can choose the option of using a passkey from another device, which will show a QR code for you to scan on the device that has the passkey. You can then use your old device to scan the QR code and complete the authentication process.

Can I switch to other verification methods even if I have a passkey set up?

Your passkey will be your default verification method if it has been set up. If you wish to switch to another verification method, you can dismiss the passkey verification pop-up and choose another method in the Verification Options menu.

Passkey Management

How do I remove a passkey?

You can remove any passkey you have created. However, you are advised to keep at least one passkey to protect your account from remote attacks and phishing. Removing a passkey takes five steps:

1. Go to Settings > Security > Passkey

2. Tap the three dots next to the passkey you wish to remove

3. Tap Delete Passkey

4. Confirm your passkey removal

5. Complete the verification process

Can I rename a passkey?

You can change the name of any passkey by:

1. Tapping on the three dots next to the passkey you wish to rename

2. Tap Edit Passkey Name

3. Enter its new name and tap Save Name

What are the benefits of saving my passkey on a security key?

A hardware security key like YubiKey is a passkey-compatible cryptographic hardware token that increases your account security. Unlike common passkeys that are synchronised to your Apple or Google account, passkeys stored in the security key never leave the hardware itself, making them immune to digital theft. The only potential breach is through physical theft.
